CISAC’s activities in Latin America are taken care of at the office located in Santiago de Chile. Its major tasks are:

- the creation of new collective management societies and the strengthening of existing ones; special attention is currently being paid to creating authors’ societies’ for non-musical repertoires and to professionalism and management infrastructure, in order to back economic results.

- to obtain the recognition of copyright laws by the public, users and government authorities. The protection of authors is recognised in Latin America: all countries have passed specific laws and have adhered to the International Conventions. This protection should be applied as widely as possible, in order to obtain fair payment from more and more users.

Recently, CISAC has been devoting much of its efforts to boosting authors’ societies in Central America, where there are currently eight societies covering creators in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Panama. Critical to this region is the establishment of royalty rates and negotiations with user groups. CISAC has offered legal, technical and financial assistance to these growing societies.

CISAC has also dedicated much energy to the the creation of visual arts societies, organising various seminars.

On a multi-repertoire front, CISAC continues to run its annual training seminar in participation with WIPO. The seminar draws participants from around the region and deals with subjects such as CIS development, management and negotiation techniques, rate and collection parameters. Legal aid has also been offered to societies throughout the region, with the Latin American Director working in close collaboration with local societies to fight harmful legislation and aggressive user groups.

On a pan-regional level, the regional office has worked hand-in-hand with Latin American societies to stress the value of protecting creators to the government officials involved in the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas.

Ibero-American Committee

Chair
Alexis Buenseñor (AGADU)

The Ibero-American Committee promotes the defence of authors in Latin America and the moral and material protection of their work. It:

- encourages improvements in legislation and stimulates the enactment of laws in countries which do not adhere to international agreements
- supports existing societies and stimulates the establishment of new ones
- promotes the harmonisation of regulations concerning royalty collection in order to obtain fair and appropiate distribution by societies

As to carrying out its tasks, the Committee may designate commissions, organise seminars, intervene in possible conflicts and coordinate activities between societies, such as the standardisation of procedures.

The Committee is composed of Ibero-America member societies, including those whose headquarters are in Spain or Portugal. It meets once a year and is presided by the Chair, who presides over the Committee’s actions and debates.
